What Is a Signal Score? Signalmap's Exchange Ranking System Explained

Signal Score is Signalmap's proprietary metric for ranking crypto exchange hiring activity. This post explains how it's calculated and what different scores mean.

# What Is a Signal Score? Signalmap's Exchange Ranking System Explained Signal Score is the core metric at the heart of Signalmap. Every exchange we track has one. It's not a price score, a volume score, or a reputation score — it's a measure of strategic hiring velocity and focus. ## The Short Definition **Signal Score**: A 0–100 metric measuring the strength, velocity, and strategic focus of a crypto exchange's current hiring activity. - **90–100**: High-velocity, multi-department hiring with clear product build or expansion signals - **70–89**: Elevated hiring with specific strategic direction visible - **50–69**: Moderate hiring — growth stage but not urgent expansion - **30–49**: Low or declining hiring — maintenance mode or early contraction - **0–29**: Minimal hiring — potential hiring freeze, restructuring, or exit signals ## What Goes Into the Score Signal Score is a weighted composite of five factors: **1. Hiring Volume (30% weight)** Total active job postings vs. historical baseline. Raw count, normalized for exchange size. **2. Hiring Velocity (25% weight)** Rate of new postings in the past 4 weeks vs. the 12-week average. Acceleration matters more than absolute level. **3. Department Diversity (20% weight)** Hiring across multiple departments (compliance + engineering + product simultaneously) signals a major build vs. point-in-time maintenance. **4. Seniority Signal (15% weight)** Senior and leadership hires (VP, Director, Head of) weighted more heavily — they precede team buildouts and signal strategic commitment. **5. Geographic Expansion (10% weight)** New jurisdiction hiring (especially roles requiring local regulatory knowledge) signals market entry preparation. ## Current Exchange Scores (Q1 2026) | Exchange | Score | Interpretation | |---|---|---| | OKX | 95 | Full expansion, multiple products imminent | | Binance | 91 | Strong, consolidating with selective expansion | | Coinbase | 89 | Institutional and EU expansion in progress | | Kraken | 72 | IPO-preparation mode, selective growth | | Bybit | 68 | Geographic expansion phase | | Crypto.com | 55 | Moderate — maintaining current products | | Robinhood Crypto | 48 | Moderate — US-focused, cautious | | Bitpanda | 44 | B2B pivot with selective hiring | | BitMEX | 38 | Post-restructuring maintenance mode | | Gemini | 22 | Hiring freeze — watch for strategic announcement | ## How to Use Signal Score **For investors**: Score above 80 = higher probability of positive announcements in the next 60–90 days. Score below 30 = watch for negative news. **For researchers**: Compare score trends over time — a declining score from 85→60 over 3 months is more concerning than a stable 60. **For journalists**: Sudden score shifts (±15 points in 4 weeks) often precede newsworthy announcements. **For traders**: Combine with on-chain data and options market structure for directional conviction. ## What Signal Score Doesn't Measure - Financial health or profitability - Product quality or user experience - Trading volume or market share - Employee satisfaction Signal Score is a forward-looking strategic indicator, not a comprehensive exchange quality rating.
